Toucans are vibrant, tropical birds native to Central and South America, known for their large, colorful beaks. They are found primarily in forested areas, such as the rainforests of South America, but also in savannas in the case of the toco toucan. Toucans mostly eat fruit, although they sometimes consume small animals like insects or lizards. Their bright bills, often larger than their bodies, help them reach fruit from branches while conserving energy. The beak also assists in thermoregulation, helping the bird release heat in tropical climates
While watching the movie Rio, the designer was deeply inspired by Rafael, the vibrant toucan. Rafael is not just a loyal friend to Blu and Jewel, but also a symbol of the energy and diversity found in the Brazilian rainforest. In the film, Rafael’s iconic large beak represents the unique beauty of nature—it helps him effortlessly pick fruits and regulate body temperature, symbolizing adaptability, balance, and harmony with the environment.
The designer drew from Rafael’s courage, fearlessness, and sense of teamwork, while also being captivated by his lively and colorful appearance.
